Chase stepped up behind Ari, his muscles taut, his head held high, his mighty ebony horn a lethal-looking spear. His muscles glowed bronze in the shadowy forest.

"Well," Tenshi said. "Is this the great Sun-chaser, Lord of the Animals? Although we have never met, it is an honor to see you in our humble forest." There was sarcasm in Tenshi's voice.

Chase rumbled angrily, "Your humble forest, is it? There was a time when the Forest of Fellows belonged to the One Who Rules. Have times changed so much that you feel no shame in breaking the Commandment of Peace?"

"You may be Lord of the Animals," Tenshi said, "but that gives you no authority over the centaurs. We are human and animal both."

"I have authority over anyone who threatens the Royal Princess."

Ari wondered how she had lost control of the situation so quickly. "Wait! I am here to stop a fight, not start one. It does not matter who has authority over whom." Ari strode past Tenshi into the middle of the battlefield. "No, I do not rule this land. But I'm carrying the Royal Scepter. The Scepter is a magic talisman given long ago by the One Who Rules to the Royal Family of Balinor. The Scepter's power taps into the Deep Magic that was born at the beginning of time. This Scepter gives me the authority to settle your dispute."
